12.12.80 Hartford, CT, intro to ´Independence Day´
´´I grew up in this small town, just about....10,000 people....and....it seemed like every place ....every place that I looked, I could see people....just standing there, seeming like they were letting...just letting their lives pass ´em on by, you know....I remember when I was....when I was just 15....my father....he and my mother got married when they were real young....and I remember my father was only, he was only a little older, little older than I am right now and he seemed like, he seemed like he´d never been young a day in his life for some reason.... he´d go to work, he´d come home and just sit in the kitchen at night...you know, like he was waiting for something....I remember he....he´d send away for all, all these different books like ´How To Be, How To Be An Engineer´ or ´How To Be....´ and try to learn how to do something....that he´d like...but for some reason, it seemed like he could never, he could never find....find that one thing that was gonna make him....make him feel like he was living instead of just dying a little bit every day....and it seems like in school that....it was always the same thing (?) instead of teaching you....teaching you how to make....how to make a way of life, they´d teach you how to make, like, a way of death, instead of trying to....instead of trying to show you, help you find your place, they were teaching you stuff that was just to keep you in your place....and....that was, it was disappointing later because I remember (?) ....all those great books and stuff that they tried to....it seemed like they´d try to make you understand, how they could make, make all those people that wrote with so much passion and stuff sound so boring....(?) to wonder if someday, somebody, someday anybody could ever make the Drifters or make....or make some of those great rock and roll records ever sound that way again...one of the first things that I, that I remember is I was 15, I was riding in the car with my mother and on came ´Like A Rolling Stone´ and I couldn´t hear all the verses but I, but there was a part where he said ´How does it feel to be out on your own ?´ ....and I watched....I remember every day when I was young, I´d watch....I´d watch my parents....and it used to scare me so much that I tried to think of some way that I wasn´t gonna let it happen to me.....anyway....if you just left home this year, if you´re out on your own for the first time....this is for you tonight, alright ?....”
